Published by Home Instead Senior Care, the Helping Families Cope guide gives information on some of the conditions that are associated with dementia such as confusion, incontinence, repetitive questions and paranoia.

In addition, carers are given advice on communicating with people that have dementia and suitable activities for them. Furthermore, the documents offers ways in which such caregivers can reduce the stress that can be involved looking after loved ones. "Every day, we see the role stress plays in the lives of family caregivers who are trying to do too much with too few resources," Ed Murphy, chief executive.

He adds that "seeing in print some of the problems they face on a daily basis" can prove to be of particular benefit to carers of dementia sufferers. Those who look after people with dementia may also be interested to hear the Irish government recently revealed that the Health Service Executive is to donate €1 million to the Alzheimer Society of Ireland to develop short-term respite services aimed at people living in the mid-west.
